Sarah, I am in exactly that position and decided to go ahead anyway! I am starting my business whilst living off reduced benefits (your friend will not lose most of her benefits until she starts making a profit, not straight away on registering as self-employed, as she will need to switch to Income Support) Citizen's Advice are an invaluable support to wade through the benefits mire!

The Government has no idea of how to support and encourage small business, I have approached out local MP and been given the standard "talk to your bank manager" or BusinessLInk. What we need is some grass roots real world help, i.e. tailing off benefits gradually or even an interest free Government backed loan. If single parents/carers/disabled people were made a priority to encourage into self employment,, the benefit to the individual and the State would be enormous.

I wish your friend the best of luck!

That's an interesting point, Jane. As a parent coach, I can help mothers (and fathers!) to look at their situations from different perspectives. Do we work just for the money, and is this job fulfilling as well as financially rewarding? Does it stretch us to achieve more than we thought we could, or offer us a respite from domestic dramas? If there are other needs - intellectual, social, creative - how best can these be met? What are our values? What kind of parents do we want to be? What do we want for our children? What kind of family life do we want to have?

Often we start work and just continue, not stopping long enough to consider where we want to be in five or ten years' time, and what impact we're having on our family. If you'd like to explore the options available to you as a parent - and human being in your own right - parent coaching can help you to discover new possibilities, make powerful choices and create a future more aligned with your values.

Paullette is right, confidence does matter, but it is not always an easy thing to build. I think attending Networking events like Ladies at Eleven helps with confidence building. You get to meet a lot of supportive Ladies and as you have to give a 60 seconds at each meeting you gradually get more confident in talking in front of a group of people.

Thanks for your kind comments Katrina. As you say, what’s relevant is saving over a regular period, even if it seems like a small amount.

I found Mary's article very interesting. It is amazing what can be achieved just by saving a little bit of money here & there. Most people do not realise the effect compound interest has on an investment that remains untouched over a period of time.

Mary always manages to explain financial matters in a nice straightforward way in order to remove the mystery that surrounds financial affairs for a lot of people.
